Origin Stories

According to Wikipedia:

Origin story is a term used in the study of myths.  It can refer to narratives of how the world began, how, creatures and plants came into existence, and why certain things in the cosmos have certain qualities.

People have an innate need to explain their surroundings and events.  Think of all major scientific discoveries, marinated in years of observation, stories, and testing of stories to see what holds true.

Wikipedia also describes the origin story as:

An account or back-story revealing how a character or team gained their superpowers and/or the circumstances under which they became superheroes or supervillians.

We all have our origin stories.  It is our experiences that culminate into the unique human being that we have become; with each passing year adding another chapter in our story.

There once was a time when I thought it was important that everyone that worked with me understood my origin story, knew where I came from.   This weekend I had an incredible breakthrough.  I have always known that coaching is about the other person.  It is about helping that person recognize patterns, change patterns, and re-spin their tale to the greatness that is within.

Each individual that I have worked with comes with an origin story, the one tale in their life story that was the catalyst for change.  The one time where a decision had to be made and the result was that person stepping into their greatness.

In the past, I thought it was important to impart my origin story along the journey so those I worked with understood that I had been there.  This weekend I was given a very valuable gift.  A person came into my life that imparted her origin story, not through words, but rather through her support of my story.

Now I have shifted my understanding that through acknowledging your origin story my story is fulfilled.  It is as if for the very first time I understand the word Namaste at my most inner core.

I have read these words, believed them to be true, thought I was embodying this concept for many years.  Now I understand synchronistic journeys on a completely different level.

Visualize the last time you truly felt as one with another person.  That time when there was no boundary and as if in a field of beautiful flowers every sense is overwhelmed with raw beautiful input.

Now imagine if that was your experience every hour of every day.  Wow!

Yet our existence tends to be defined by the times when we are not in that place with another person.  Something I shall be pondering over the weeks to come.
